While units were responding, communications advised they were unsure if it was the building burning or bushes in front. They received 2 calls at that point, but were conflicting. One caller said the bushes were on fire and the other saying the actual building was on fire. Amb1-7 arrived and reported heavy smoke mostly confined to the bushes. AC1-1 arrived and established Command-1 and found fire was also burning up side of building on a decorative trim attached to the building. DC47 from Sta.4 arrived and grabbed the front bumper line off E1-2 as it quickly arrived and extinguished the fire. Crews also removed the trim and checked for extension, with none found. Command-1 downgraded the assignment as the area was further wetted down to ensure outage. The fire was found to have originally started by a bird nest inside an outside light pole, which caused the plastic protective panels in the light fixture to catch fire and drop onto the ground starting the fire below. A second light pole on the other side of building had the same occurrence at one point, but did not set the area on fire, but you could see the burn marks on the ground where the same situation could have occurred. The former ENGINE 1-4, presently reserve Engine 1-3.... until today. Sunday, March 13, 2005 - McKinley Street Station personnel began the process of stripping the old "Engine 1-4" of equipment and hose . This unit ran out of the Franklin Street Station as Engine 1-4 since its birth in 1978 until a couple of years ago when it temporarily ran as Engine 1-1. Most recently, it served a short lifespan in reserve capacity, known as Engine 1-3, before being finally retied to out of service status today. Through "word of mouth", the McConnellsburg Fire Department of Fulton County, PA learned that the Borough of Chambersburg was in procession of an old spill unit, being gotten rid of, and came to look at the unit. They were excited about the unit and made an offer to the Borough of Chambersburg, which was accepted. This unit left and made the trip over the mountain to Fulton County to become their new spill unit about 2 weeks ago. During the visit, they were interested in the old "Engine 1-2" from Headquarters Station, which served as a reserve engine for several recent years, known as Engine 1-5. They informed the Needmore Fire Company in Fulton County of these 2 "twins" that were being sold. Needmore personnel looked at the equipment and made an offer to the Borough of Chambersburg, which too was accepted. Engine 1-5 was already stripped off all equipment from several months ago and was awaiting a possible trip to an auction before Needmore came and began the process of making an offer. These two engines served the residents and visitors for many years, and served the department well. Needmore Fire Company is planning to repaint the engine (Engine 1-3) and put it into service to serve as a second engine for their company as Fulton County Engine 2-55. The other engine will mainly be used for parts, as needed. The "twins" will soon be leaving Chambersburg within the next couple of days, as we finish the process of stripping the remainder of the equipment. We wish both these departments, on their recent additions, and hope these units serve and protect their communities for many year's to come.
