PAVILION FIRE

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2006 - Company 1 and Squad 41 was dispatched to 750 Fifth Avenue, Amvet's, in the 1-01 District for a reported building fire at 1931 hours.  Initial crews arrived to find the chicken bar-b-que grill pavilion roof was on fire.  E1-2 and crews extinguished the fire while E1-1 crew was sent to scene to assist with overhaul.  The crew also helped E1-2 reload their 5" supply line.  The units were placed available by Command 1 (N Reitz, AC1-5) at 2019 hours.

While this incident was in the beginning stages, just after dispatch, other members were going to the station to obtain turnout gear and apparatus when they were approached by a neighbor reporting a rail road tank car was leaking fluid on the highline by the station.  A member went to investigate and found a heavy leaking diesel fuel spill occurring from a pipe under one of the tank cars.  A request was made for additional assistance sending Station-4 since the remainder of Company 1 was on the other fire.  E45 arrived and called for additional assistance to include Marion Squad 8, Haz Mat 13 from Letterkenny, County and Local EMA and additional resources and staff.  After a period of time, the leak was controlled and rail road officials arrived to perform their measures to off-load the tank car.  The CPD (Chambersburg Police) is investigating the incident with the railroad because someone apparently placed items on the tracks that severed the tank.   Fire Police also directed traffic around the area, including the Orchard Drive crossing since the train was stopped in the crossing.

Additionally, the crew of E45 was surprised to find that a pair of bunker pants and boots were removed out of a compartment on the engine while it sat on Garfield Street.  They were later retrieved with the arrest and help of a witnessing neighbor, the C.P.D. and other sources.

HERE WE GO AGAIN !!!

THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2006 - ET-1 was dispatched just after 10am to assist on Letterkenny FD (Company 13), Box 13-2 for a grass fire.  While en route, just before former Gate 1 of Letterkenny on Letterkenny Road, the front passenger side tire blew out..  This was the same tire that was just repaired and put back into service from the previous tire episode that occurred while at the barn fire scene and the tire just went flat.  Mechanics took the tire apart and reassembled it, putting ET1 back in service on Tuesday morning.  This call created a little more intense moments when the tire blew while driving, but the driver was able to maintain control and get the unit stopped.  The unit was parked and awaited for Service 100 (Dave's Truck Repair) to come and tow it again.  After a through investigation, it is believed that the cause lies in the fact that the front tires have "split wheel rims".  These rims apparently are not used, or recommended, anymore and are being replaced with new aluminum wheels and new tires.  It is believed this will rectify the situation.  The ET should be out of service for a couple of days while the items are ordered and should be back in service before weeks end.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2006 - E1-1 was dispatched to Edenville-Chessetown Road in the area of the 8700 block for a reported Silo Fire at 1309 hours in Saint Thomas Township, Box 18-13.  E1-1 went responding and upon arrival at scene, went immediately out of service at 1321 hours.  Crews pulled a dry chem. extinguisher finding fire under the lift-up portion of the dashboard.  Another unit advised communications that the unit was on fire. Engine 43 (Station 4) arrived a few seconds before and backed up to assist.  The fire was already knocked down and the unit remained out of service awaiting AC1-1 to arrive and Service-100 (Dave's Truck Repair) was contacted for towing.  This actually is not the first time for this type occurrence relating to electrical problems and commonly is referred to as the "FireCab Special" (which is out of business).  This electrical fire was a little more intense than previous ones.  This is about the sixth time.  Maintenance personnel is reporting the grounding wire system is what burnt for the emergency lights, etc.; hopefully this time, it will be fixed correctly.  It is expected to be out of service for several weeks while the repairs are made (and dry chem. cleaned out).   Regarding the Silo Fire, it turned out to be a "Good Intent Call'.  Special Thanks to St. Thomas Company 18 and Station 4, Franklins for assisting until Dave's Towing arrived.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, 2006 -  E1-1 was alerted to the 1-04 District at 440 Hollywell Avenue for an automobile fire in the parking lot of Rob & Dara's Bar at 2341 hrs.  E1-1 and AC1-1 (Gigs) arrived on scene to find a foreign vehicle parked that was smoking from the engine compartment.  Crews checked and opened hood determining the vehicle was not on fire; however, was running and the smoke was from the motor burning oil, but with a bad "miss" and "rocking" in the motor.  The motor was not actually running, but acting like it was trying to stall out, but could not.  Crews attempted to shut the motor off, but there was no one around vehicle, no keys in the ignition and was an automatic transmission, so the option of "dumping the clutch" to stall the motor was out.  Crews also disconnected the battery and pulled all of the spark plugs, but it did not change the situation, as it was still attempting to run.  It was also ruled out that it was not a starter problem.  The options were running out on how to get this motor to stop, then it finally sputtered to a stop after a few minutes.

Units Responding : E1-1, Amb1-9
