TRANSFER / STANDBY

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2008 - About 0730 hours, a crew with ET-14 headed to Gettysburg (Adams County Co. 1) to transfer / standby at their station during the Pennsylvania State Fireman's Convention Parade held in Gettysburg.  It was originally set up that the standby would be for around 26 hours; however, was cut short due to the inclement weather.  The transfer crews were released around 7pm and headed home.  ET-14 was the "engine company"; New Franklin Truck-17 and Adams Engine/Rescue 2 (Fairfield) handled the "Rescue" portion.  Adams Ambulance 19A (Bonneauville) and Frederick County, MD Ambulance 307 (Thurmont) handled the EMS incidents.  Besides several EMS incidents throughout the day, the only other call was for the rescue to assist on a mutual aid auto accident.  The crews returned around 7pm.

The vehicle originally was parked inside a garage on Wallace Avenue when the driver apparently put the vehicle in drive and drove into the living room of his own house, then backed out onto the driveway, then onto the street.  He then continued in reverse, up the street towards Highland Avenue.  He then continued in reverse up onto the sidewalk, striking and pushing the postal worker up through the grass into the 2nd house.  E1-4 remained on scene until 1450 hours.

THE END OF A LONG TRADITION

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 - At the regularly scheduled Friendship Fire Company meeting, Fire Chief Robert "Gigs" W. Murray read a letter to the membership, stating at the end of this year (term as fire chief), he/I will be stepping down and resigning as both the Fire Chief of this company, and also the Assistant Fire Chief of the Borough of Chambersburg Fire Department.  This will also include my membership to take effect on Tuesday evening, January 6th, 2009.  The next four months will serve as time to pass on an abundant amount of information to designees.
Membership began on July 2nd, 1985 as a junior member of the Friendship Fire Company / Chambersburg Fire Department.  In September of 1995 was promoted to Lieutenant 1-3 of the CFD.   On August 19, 2002 was then promoted to Assistant Chief 1-1 of the CFD.   In the Friendship Fire Company, was elected into the Fire Chief position when Engine-Tanker 14 ("1" pre "14") was purchased and placed into service on March 31, 2006 when the company created the position.  Within the company, served in many capacities over the years to include President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Trustee, Fireman's Relief Rep, many committee's, Fire Chief, etc.
As the letter stated, "it clearly needs understood that their are no hard feelings, turmoil or displeasure of this company or the CFD that prompts this endeavor.  I have given it a lot of thought and have come to peace at my decision. The primary reason for this endeavor stems from "burn out".   Their just comes a time, after giving so much of your life, 23+ years, and commitment to the organization, that it is time to close the end of a chapter.  I have given 100% enthusiasm and commitment to this company and I am just burnt out and it has come time to move on.  Life is short.  Many people across the county mention when they think of McKinley Street, or Company 14, Gigs comes to mind first and does make me feel good.  I appreciate the impact I have provided to this company, the members and the community along with the friendships I have gained and the experience I have received.  I would not be where I was today (employment) if it weren't for Co. 1 and Co. 14.  It has been a pleasure serving as a leader of this organization, one of the oldest in the state, to help bring us where we are today and a pleasure working with the mutual aid departments.  Along with the help of the members over the years, I hope that the tradition can continue to be carried on to lead the Friendships onward and upward."  As the letter further read, "although to be legal the letter must state resignation, I would find it more appropriate to be considered as "retirement"".

ENGINE TANKER 14 SOON READY FOR SERVICE

Monday, July 28, 2008 - After being out of service for a month due to a motor failure.  "Big Red" is soon to be ready for service again.  The Detriot Deisel 8V92TA motor suffered a major failure during a transfer assignment to Blue Ridge Summit (Company 4) at the end of June.  The unit was towed and the motor being overhauled and is about complete.  The motor has been completely overhauled.  The failure was traced to a lower ball joint that froze up on the crack shaft, which caused to motor to immediately and excessively overheat.  The unit should be ready this week and ready again for service.  We appreciate the support from our mutual aid departments who filled in on our assignments during this time.
